Charkhas

Charkha is the Indian word for "wheel" and is also the name used for their ingenious portable spinning wheels.  They are geared to have a high ratio which is excellent for spinning high twist yarns, such as cotton.  We have two charkhas to choose from - the authentic Indian book charkha, and the Ashford Accelerated Charkha.

Authentic Indian Book Charkha
Made of teak, finished and ready to use.  Everything has a place and fits together to create a book-sized package when closed.   Comes with yarn winder and three spindles.  Ratio is approximately 65:1.  Great for spinning fine and/or short fibers into very fine yarns.

Ashford Upright Charkha

Ashford Accelerated Charkha...$255.00  #109333

• An upright model with rubber feet, convenient for tabletop spinning.
• The 9" wheel that can be assembled for either left or right hand cranking.
• 2 ratios- 16:1 by driving the spindle directly or 80:1 via the countershaft accelerating the spindle.
• The wheel, countershaft & spindle all run on ball bearings for very smooth action.
• The  spindle is tapered from 5/32" stainless steel. 
• The drive belt is 2mm polycord

• The tension is adjustable by means of a slot in the spindle base.
