Beads
& Braids, Jacqui Carey. Combining beads and Kumi Himo braids
through 120 innovative samples with full instructions. The
variety of possibilities with kumihimo are endless just using color and thread.
This author of one of the better books on Kumihimo in English, "Creative
Kumihimo" has just transcended the color/thread dimension and gone on to a
new, previously unexplored area of braiding. After a basic overview of
some of the standard braid moves, she introduces a series of bead embellishment
techniques, each with a full page, color gallery of examples. She sews on
beads, she braids with strands of beads, she drops beads down into the braid,
she braids off pendants, etc., and she has some beaded braid endings that will
delight even old braiders with their elegance. Beaders and braiders check

Beginner's
Guide to Braiding: The Craft of Kumihimo, Jacqui Carey. This is an example of how an author who is well versed in
a subject can translate the details of creating a complex item into simple steps.
Traditionally, they are done on a smooth wooden frame called a marudai.
Instructions are included (for outfitting a lamp shade frame with a cardboard
"mirror", and transforming empty film canisters into substitutes for
the traditional wooden bobbins) for those with a tentative interest. The only
other materials you'll need can be improvised from things you'll find around the
house. Simple diagrams illustrate the instructions. Six projects with tips on equipment and innovation.

Creative
Kumihimo, Jacqui Carey. A new approach to the ancient art of braiding.
Perfect for the beginner while at the same time inspiring to the experienced.
Clearly written with a variety of diagrams and color photos. The
key word to this book is "creative." Clear presentation of the
basic information for braiding leads the braider to a new "creative"
development. Most books give the braider a structure and several color set-ups
for braid variety. This author presents a braid structure not only in movement
diagrams, but also a structure diagram that can be used to develop a color
arrangement and the color set-up. There are some new 16-bobbin structures and a
multitude of variations. Many finishes, bead appliqué, and a color gallery round
out this important braiding book. ISBN: 0952322501. 100 pages.

DVD
- Kumihimo: Japanese Braiding, Rodrick Owen.
I confess I was both fascinated and a bit daunted by Roderick Owen's beautifully
produced book "Braids: 250 Patterns from Japan, Peru & Beyond," so
this dvd, produced as the companion to the book, is just exactly what I needed
to get started with Kumihimo. If you are an experienced braid artist you
probably don't need the dvd, but his step-by-step development of everything
concerned with the process of braiding simplifies and broadens the text of his
book, particularly for the beginner. Very clearly photographed, segmented and
organized, I highly advise this dvd to accompany the book for the beginning
braid artist. 115 minutes. $29.95 #139583

Making
Kumihimo: Japanese Interlaced Braids, Roderick Owen.
The world of Takadai (single and double layered flat braids) fully explored.
Most textile artists these days know about the precise multi-faceted braiding
from Japan that comes under the word "kumihimo." The key to that
branch covered by this new manual is the word in the subtitle,
"interlaced." The small, marudai and kakudai, stool style of weighted,
bobbin braiding has seen new books and nice equipment made available for study
and practice over the past decade. We, Westerners, have not seen much, except in
Japanese-language imported books, about the other styles of bobbin braiding:
takedai and ayetakadai, made on a "bench" that looks more like loom.
The finished braids are flat fabric-like structures that are familiar to those
who have looked at the various interlacing techniques from around the world. As
with the other styles of bobbin braiding, there are basic structure patterns, or
moves, and then, there are color arrangement patterns. Rodrick Owen presents
some amazingly clear diagrams of the structure and color patterns. If you have
the weighted bobbins from working with your little marudai, the work bench for
takedai, nice materials like the traditional stranded silk, and interest in
advancing your personal repertoire of braiding skills, then this basic manual
for takedai (and maybe a trip on the Internet to Rodrick's links) will enhance
your study. ISBN: 1861083122. 192

Samurai
Undressed, Jacqui Carey. This book elaborates on the functional role that Japanese braiding - kumihimo - plays in holding sections of Samurai armor together,
as well as the history of Samurai armor. The detailed descriptions recall the ritual and craftsmanship that mark much of Japanese life. The author examines the actual construction of the braids and armor beginning with the earliest (8 A.D.) evidence, through to the abolition of the Samurai class in 1868.
Full color and black and white photos, plus line drawings, explain the details of
assembly that hold the protective pieces together. ISBN: 095232251X.

The
Techniques of Ply-Split Braiding, Peter Collingwood.
After scanning over this book, one unfamiliar with the author might be surprised
to know that this is his seventh book on a textile technique. You might feel
that a book so complex and thorough would have taken the author a lifetime. The
author explains in his introduction that this book is for either the textile
pioneer to learn about the ethnic background of this technique or for an
ethnologist to learn a new craft for their studies. We who love a challenge in
our textile studies will find this rare technique well illustrated and strictly
organized. Most of the samples are camel and livestock trappings and sturdy to
the nth power. A modern textile artist will find this ancient technique a new
adventure. Many illustrations and a black & white gallery of examples of
braids and tools. ISBN: 0962558699. Hardcover, $60.00 #139104
