American Starwork CoverletsAMERICAN STAR WORK COVERLETS, Judith Gordon.
Star and diamond coverlets are easy to recognize by their patchwork quilt-like "star" and "diamond" motifs and checkerboard texture.  The author analyzes eighty 19th century examples.  A contemporary weaver with a multi-shaft loom can reproduce these coverlets from the information given.  More likely, however, is that the threading systems, particularly one called "star-and-diamond variation", will invite further exploration.  This variation produces the appearance of a multi-shaft "overshot on opposites", but on fewer shafts.  For the non-weaver, this book can act as an introduction to understanding coverlet designs and the way they are created.  Profusely illustrated. ISBN: 558213821.  152 pages.  8¾" x 11¼", hardcover.  $29.95  #139169

This book is a pleasure to own. In it, Mrs. Atwater describes little-known weaving techniques from various parts of the world. Instructions are given for an amazing variety of weaves. Color WorksCOLOR WORKS: The Crafter's Guide to Color, Deb Menz.
We all love color—its boundless array of hues dazzles our eyes, expresses our moods, and enriches our very lives. Thanks to Deb Menz, master teacher and author of the highly respected book Color in Spinning (Interweave Press, 1998), you can now explore colors with confidence in whatever craft medium you call your favorite. This is the first book to bring the principles of color theory down to a practical level and apply them to knitting, spinning, weaving, surface design (including stenciling and rubber stamping), hand- and machine-embroidery, beadwork, quilting, and paper collage. Basic color concepts are presented in sections on color description, values, contrasting and complementary colors, warm and cool colors, undertones, using color relationships, and much more. But the real treat is seeing a dynamic palette of color harmonies worked up in each medium! This approach is invaluable for mixed-media artists or those who simply dabble in more than one craft. Also included is a pull-out color wheel and a very handy section of hue cards in perforated format that are easy to remove and use for planning, matching, and shopping for supplies (Plus, there is a handy pocket in the back of the book to hold them!). If understanding color is the bridge to creative expression, how did we ever live without this book?  Covered spiral binding, 7 x 9 1/4, 152 pages, 55 color photographs , color strips, two color wheels, ISBN 1-931499-47-0  $24.95  #239079

The Complete Book of Drafting for HandweaversTHE COMPLETE BOOK OF DRAFTING, Madelyn van der Hoogt.
This is a book on drafting that is also a handbook of weaves.  You'll not only learn to use drafting tools - warp and weft drawdowns, warp and weft cross section, and block profile rafts, you'll also learn to design with pattern weaves.  Under one cover find the steps for drafting and weaving any profile design in any unit weave as well as extras like color-and-weave, blended drafts, turned drafts, network drafting, and fabric analysis.  Beginner and advanced weavers will refer to it as a constant resource, form the firs to the last day you weave!  This is destined to become a classic with its clear and concise explanations and excellent diagrams and illustrations!  144 pages, black and white photographs and diagrams.  Spiralbound softcover.  $23.95  #139181

Crackle WeaveCRACKLEWEAVE, 1989 Revised Edition, Mary Snyder.
Crackle weave is one of the lesser-known weaves, and has great design possibilities. The designs are produced by the arrangement of blocks. Ms. Snyder presents over 90 projects arranged to teach the design possibilities in the weave, the use of crackle weave in producing traditional and contemporary fabrics, as well as the use of crackle weave in ecclesiastical weaving and multiple harness weaving. The book would make a good group study project. Profusely illustrated.  153 pages.  ISBN: 0318195704.  5½" x 8½", softcover  $12.50  #139172
